Which Way is Home?

by Khanh Tran

“I was born and raised in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. My mother tongue is Vietnamese. In first grade, I started to learn English. As a high school student, I attended a bilingual school that encouraged me to speak both English and Vietnamese. For my bachelor’s degree, I have come to the Netherlands and I’ve picked up a little Dutch along the way. Because my family is in Vietnam and I study in the Netherlands, there is a lot of travelling back and forth, switching from one language to another constantly. Somehow, these changes make me feel like I am living in middle: not completely in Vietnam, but neither in the Netherlands. But then where is home, which language am I fluent in? From this feeling, I created this artwork, depicting strange in-between in which I live.”
